  11. There is now a new way to buy ST software from your local computer  shop 
  12. -  EDOS.  It  is being introduced by Software on Demand  Ltd,  based  in 
  13. Newcastle-under-Lyme. This system was talked about some time ago but has 
  14. now only just come into operation. Basically EDOS licensed stores have a 
  15. terminal with all the games available on EDOS encryted onto CD-ROM.  The 
  16. terminal also has 3½",  3" and 5¼" disk drives and a cassette  unit,  so 
  17. that your selected game can be copied to more down-to-earth media.

  19. 10  formats  are  supported from MSX (with a grand total of  9  games  - 
  20. mostly  by  Alternative software!) and Spectrum to  Amiga,  PC  and  ST. 
  21. Because  the copy is made in-store,  and not volume  duplicated,  it  is 
  22. virtually guaranteed to work error free and be virus free too.  It  also 
  23. means,  of  course  that  the shop will never run out  of  stock  or  be 
  24. lumbered with a load of trashy games nobody wants.  The shop does keep a 
  25. stock  of  all the packaging  materials though,  like boxes  (the  small 
  26. glass type ones) and the instructions and inlays,  but these are not  as 
  27. expensive to the shop, as the complete game is.

  29. EDOS is a fully approved and copyrighted system.  Every sale is recorded 
  30. inside the terminal,  and at specific intervals,  Software on Demand Ltd 
  31. collect  all the sales figures from the participating shops via a  modem 
  32. link, so that royalty payments may be made to the software houses.

  34. A  free  32 page catalogue contains details on all the  games  available 
  35. with EDOS. There are currently about 172 titles available, virtually all 
  36. budget releases from companies like Codemasters,  Titus and  Alternative 
  37. software.  Games include Mercenary, Defender of Crown, Rocket Ranger and 
  38. Super  Cars.  Prices are generally £4.99 or £7.99 with the odd £9.99  as 
  39. well.  There are a number of old and rather obscure games (ever heard of 
  40. No Exit by Coktel Vison,  or how about Mad Show by Silmarils?),  but  if 
  41. you happen to be looking for that elusive game, you may find it here.

  43. Only  a handful of shops currently take part in EDOS - Computer  Visions 
  44. in  Reading (run by Riverdene PDL) is one,  but hopefully as more  shops 
  45. take part and the system becomes more well known, better and newer games 
  46. will become availble.
